P90X Day 6

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/27/2010 – Thursday

One thing I’ve noticed for the past several days is that my body feels warm all the time. I don’t know if it’s because lately the temperature has been in the 90s, or it’s just as a byproduct of P90X, or maybe both.

Tonight we just finished day 6, which was “Chest and Back”. Basically, it’s a constant push ups and pull ups for one hour. I felt like I was able to keep up better, but at the end of it, it’s still brutal. Even now as I’m typing, my arms are still shaking.

Definitely getting hungrier than usual. With P90X, we are not supposed to starve ourselves since the energy is needed to keep up the performance. Just need to make sure eating more protein than carbs for now.

Because of Memorial day weekend and people are traveling out of town, we have decided to do the next exercise in the morning. So, the next one is Plyometrics (the most difficult thus far) at 6am. I’m not even sure I’ll be awake by then. So, not only the exercise is extreme, I guess we are making the time of doing it extreme too. For some people, exercise in the morning is a second nature. For people like me, who is not a morning person in the first place and doing one of the most difficult exercises of P90X, I hope I don’t collapse.

With it being so hard, it better shows some results.

P90X Day 5

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/26/2010 – Wednesday

Today, we had a mexican theme snack day at work. In the past, despite of the name “snack day”, I have always managed to over eat for breakfast and lunch. Having this in mind, I was trying to limit myself from eating too much. I wasn’t even trying to figure out the detail anymore, like how many servings of protein or carbs I’ll be consuming. I guess I just try to eat not as much, but had no idea what category portions I’ve fulfilled.

But even then, I still over ate.

Oh well, I guess instead of trying to be too strict, I’ll try to follow the suggestion on the food as much as I can.

Today’s work out was Kenpo X. It reminds me a lot on Karate classes I used to take when I was in middle school. Tons of punching and kicking. So, I think this was actually fun.

So, tomorrow we’ll be doing the “Chest and Back”, which was supposed to be day 1.

P90X Day 4

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/25/2010 – Tuesday

With business, we didn’t start our workout until 9:15pm.

The workout was on “Legs and Back”. Lots of lunges. Started to recognize some patterns and understanding more what the instructor meant when he used certain terms. Although still not able to fully keep up with the work out all the time, but everything was more bearable.

Food is still on track with tons of egg whites and a tuna sandwich.

Bought a boxful of recovery drinks just to try out.

P90X Day 3

May 27, 2010

Date 5/24/2010 – Monday

For some reasons, the soreness wasn’t as bad as Sunday.

My other co-worker decided to join us to try this out. It was exciting to have more people doing this. So, it’s three of us now.

Today’s workout was Yoga X. It was about 1.5 hours. Some movements were practically requiring us to be a rubber man. Other than that, it was a nice stretch and balancing.

I’m more in line with the food portions today. Started to look forward more for the next day of workout since my body has slowly adjusted to the workout.

P90X Day 2

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/23/2010 – Sunday

So, I started the day with my body in so much pain. Trying to go through the day and being constantly reminded that this pain will be compounded more later in the day with another P90X workout.

During lunch, I had 2 slices of pizza, which I had no idea what that means for the food aspect of the program. I guess my excuse is that this is just day 2, I’ll do better in controlling the food next time.

As far as the day 2 exercise, we are working on “Shoulders and Arms”. Basically lots of dumbbells.

After this workout, there’s about 16 minute portion of abs workout. This part is done every other day.

P90X Day 1

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/22/2010 – Saturday

Based on the schedule, the first day was supposed to be “Chest and Back”, but because we kind of did it the day before with the fit test and our upper bodies were still sore, we decided to move on to the next work out (Plyometrics/Jump training) and come back to this one on day 6.

Let me tell you, this exercise combined with the first full day of doing it, I found this to be extremely hard. It’s a constant burning on my legs. When they said extreme, it was kidding. Good thing this was Saturday, because Sunday morning, I had to lie down in my bed longer than usual to try to overcome the muscle soreness from the lower body work out the day before and upper body work out 2 days prior.

But it was satisfying because I know I had pushed myself far enough to actually feel it the next morning.

This is pretty much what I look like right after day 1

So, I also try to eat right based on P90X recommendation. The first 4 weeks, basically lots and lots of protein and minimum carbs. they called it fat shed phase. It takes some getting use to.

The nutritional aspect has 3 options. Portion option, Meal Plan, or the quick option.

Portion option has lists of different food category (ie. carbs, protein, etc.), and there’s certain portion of servings can be taken in a day.

Meal Plan has the whole chart of what to eat in the morning, lunch, dinner and snack. Recipe is provided too. I think this will require more involvement

Quick option is basically showing some options for fast food. Just make sure certain servings are fulfilled and not over.

So, here are some of the bigger changes I had to make as far as the food is concerned:

1. I had to learn how to separate egg white. 6 Egg whites would be considered as 1 serving. and I need to take 7 servings per day.

2. Two slices of wheat bread is considered as one carbs serving and that’s all I get for the day. So, no more oat meals in the morning for now. Instead, omelete with just egg whites.

3. Start eating protein bar as part of the snack portion.

Prep for P90X

May 27, 2010

Date: 5/21/2010 – Friday

So, finally after about 2 months since the first time I heard about P90X, reading more than enough blogs about P90X than I care to count,  ordered and received the exercise DVDs, ordered and received the P90X chin up bar (16 days after the order),  talked my co-worker into doing this with me (later another one joined in), I finally did the fit test.

For those of you who don’t know what a P90X is, it’s basically an extreme home workout program.

Besides the exercise, I also would like to follow the nutritional recommendation as close as I can to reach optimum results.

So, apparently we passed the fit test. Partly I think I was able to pass it because of having someone there to do this with. There’s some kind of a psychological boost taking place. After about 40 minutes of doing the fit test, we decided to watch the first work out, which is basically start with 10 minutes of warm up and the next hour or so of push ups and pull ups. We tried to keep up, but neither of us was really doing it since it’s not day 1 yet (our excuse for not able to really keep up). We were planning on starting it the day after.

Even from the fit test, my body was sore the next day.

Here’s the sample of what the fit test looks like
